The weight of significant black larvae is either 0.07 grams or more, averaged for quantity. In terms of effective compost organisms, Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) are among the most proficient at consuming/chewing up to 99% of compost input. The substantial pre-pupa stage, which is black and still mobile (as opposed to the immobile pupa or cocoon stage), remains an excellent source of nutrition and is also ready to undergo pupation to develop into flies for breeding purposes. It is worth noting that axolotl salamanders have a preference for consuming these flies. Once the larva transforms into a fly, its lifespan is a mere eight days.
